The Texas Senate education committee heard testimony on their voucher bill (SB2) yesterday. The bill says it prioritizes “low income” families, but sets “low income” at 500% of the federal poverty guideline. 🙄
For reference, for a kid to qualify to get free and reduced price lunch at their public school, your family has be at or below 150% of the federal poverty guideline. That’s low income.
In the video, I relay the example / justification from bill author and Education Committee Chair Brandon Creighton. It’s ludicrous.
The Senate Education committee passed the bill to the full senate 9-2 yesterday (along party lines), where it will of course pass, likely mid next week.
And in other news (also yesterday), at a kick off to the Lege session at the Texas Public Policy Foundation offices and being hosted by The Texan, Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows (a Republican who received a majority of his votes from Democrats) told the room that “I do believe the political winds have shifted… I believe this will be the session for school choice.”
